Sous-arbrisseau sarmenteux de 1-2 mètres, glabre ou pubescent, à écorce amère et à bois sucré, à rameaux herbacés, un peu volubles, cylindriques
Écologie : (répartition d'après la flore) Bois humides et ruisseaux, dans toute la France et la Corse.
Répartition hors de France : Europe; Asie; Afrique septentrionale.

A rather small perennial with much-branched, rather woody but weak stems 30-100 cm long.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It grows commonly in hedges, on river banks and sandy places near the sea throughout most of the British Isles northwards to Sutherland.

Fleurs : violettes, en cymes corymbiformes divariquées, multiflores, longuement pédonculées; calice vert, petit, à lobes courts; corolle de 12-20 mm, à lobes réfléchis, marqués chacun vers la base de 2 taches vertes; anthères jaune

Flowers: 12-15 mm diam., In leafless, much-branched cymes, the peduncle on the opposite side to the leaf and often apparently in the internode; calyx pyramidal, lobes small, blunt; corolla purple with yellow spots at the base of the lobes, anthers yellow, forming a cone.
